Today's class we got a talk from the successful designer Peter Sheehan. He gave is a quick rundown of his impressive resume and his approach to design. He advised all of us to carry a notebook everywhere you got and to constantly fill it with sketches and idea's. He emphasised it's a place to experiment, speculate and create. It's a space where your work doesn't have to be shared, graded or judged. I agree that everyone needs a space like this. Since i've started to make a conscious effort to take part in this practice i've realised it's a form of meditation once you get into the flow of it, capturing idea's and collecting materials so that I can reference back to them in the future.
Another tip that was given is to have a space where you can make a mess, be creative and experiment. Maybe it's the corner of your bedroom or the garage in the back of your house. This literal creative space is similar to having a notebook but on a bigger scale. Having the knowledge that it's okay to make a mess gives me the confidence to try new things and see what works out. I also do this with my photography, experimenting with settings on photoshop until I find something I like. More often than not that is how I find a colour grade or effect that works. It's all about trial and error. For me mistakes can spark idea's that I can work off weather it be a line that was mistakenly drawn or a wrong click on a computer.
